How Much Does It Cost to Build a SaaS Product? An Honest Breakdown

"How much does it cost to build a SaaS product?" is one of the first questions founders ask, and one of the most poorly answered. Almost every quote you'll see online — "$20k!" or "$500k!" — is right for some product and wrong for yours. Cost in SaaS depends entirely on what you're building, who's building it, and how disciplined the scope is. Here's a more honest breakdown — by scope, by team shape, and by the decisions that actually move the number.

Three honest cost bands

Across the SaaS builds we've worked on, costs cluster into three rough bands. These are real-world ranges for a build done by a competent team — not the bargain end of the market and not the enterprise-consultancy end.

Band 1: ~$25k–$60k — a focused MVP

A single, well-defined workflow. One user role. Authentication, billing, a small dashboard, the core feature. You're aiming to validate the product in market with real paying users.

This is doable by a small senior team (one or two engineers, lean design) in roughly 6–12 weeks. Costs at this band are dominated by hours, so the biggest cost lever is scope discipline — every "small" extra feature pushes you toward Band 2.

Band 2: ~$60k–$200k — a real product

Multiple user roles, real onboarding, billing tiers, a few core workflows, decent UX, basic integrations, analytics, the operational scaffolding to support paying customers. Most products that get to $5–10k MRR live in this band.

A team here typically looks like: 2–3 engineers, a designer involved through the build, a part-time product/QA function. Timeline 3–6 months. The shape of the team matters more than the size — a small senior team will out-ship a bigger junior one nearly every time.

Band 3: ~$200k–$600k+ — scale, complexity, or compliance

You're building a SaaS with serious complexity from day one: multi-tenant architecture, deep integrations (Stripe, Xero, Salesforce, ERP), compliance requirements (SOC 2, GDPR-heavy data, financial regulation), or AI/ML capabilities that need real engineering — not just an API call. Enterprise customers with procurement processes start to ask things that require this kind of build.

Team is typically 4–6 people: senior engineers, design, product, plus specialists (security, ML, devops). Timeline 6–12 months. This is also where most overspend happens, because complexity scales non-linearly with scope.

These are rough but useful bands. Anyone quoting you precisely without seeing the spec is either lucky or wrong.

The five things that move the number most

Within the bands above, the costs move on a small number of decisions:

  1. Scope of the V1. The single biggest lever. A V1 that does one job at "merely good" quality might be $40k. The same product trying to do five jobs at "best-in-class" quality is easily $250k. Most of the difference isn't the new features — it's the engineering overhead each one demands.
  2. Team shape. A senior pair will ship more in two months than a junior team of five will in six. We dug into the trade-offs in staff augmentation vs hiring, but in cost terms: you pay more per hour for senior people, and you pay far fewer hours.
  3. Design quality. A clean, opinionated, professional product takes design effort. The "we'll figure out the UI as we go" path is consistently the most expensive — it ships ugly things, then pays to redo them after users tell you.
  4. Integrations. Each external system you integrate adds engineering time and ongoing maintenance. Three integrations isn't 3× one — it's more like 5×, because edge cases compound.
  5. AI features. Adding AI used to mean a research team and big costs. With hosted models it's much cheaper — but doing it responsibly (grounding, guardrails, evaluation) is still real engineering. Hidden costs founders consistently miss

The build itself isn't the whole cost. Three line items get under-counted:

  • Cloud and tooling — hosting, CI/CD, monitoring, error tracking, third-party SaaS (auth, email, analytics). Easily $200–$1,500/month even for an MVP.
  • Design and content — illustrations, photography, marketing-site copy, onboarding text, help docs. Skimping here is visible to users and costs you trust.
  • Post-launch engineering — bugs, small features, performance work, support engineering. Realistically budget 30–50% of the build cost over the first 6 months after launch. Founders who run out of money one month after launch did so because they treated launch as the end of spend.

The cheap-build trap

There's always a quote that's a fraction of what we've described — usually from offshore agencies pitching "$15k for a full SaaS." Sometimes you genuinely get usable code for that. Often you get a codebase you can't extend, a UI users don't trust, and a rebuild bill that exceeds what a careful build would have cost in the first place.

How to spend smartly

A few rules that consistently lower the real cost of a SaaS build without lowering the quality:

  • Cut scope before you cut quality. Two great features beat five mediocre ones.
  • Pick boring, mainstream technology. Hiring a senior is easier; debugging at 11pm is easier; the codebase outlives the trend.

  • Pay for design. It's the cheapest credibility you can buy.
  • Build evaluation and observability from day one. Cheaper than diagnosing problems blind, every time.

A representative example

A realistic build we've shipped in Band 2 looks something like: a multi-tenant SaaS dashboard with billing tiers, two user roles, three core workflows, Stripe + email + Slack integrations, a clean opinionated design, basic analytics, and a small admin tool. Built by a senior team in roughly 4 months. Total in the range of $80–$140k depending on integrations and polish.

It's not the cheapest build you'll be quoted. It's also the one that doesn't get rebuilt twelve months later.
